Ethnic map of Yugoslavia

Writer's picture: hunmapperhunmapper

Last ethnic map before the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991. Serbs were the largest ethnic group of the country followed by Croats and Bosniaks.

The number and distribution of the Albanians is only estimated because almost all of them boycotted the census following a call by Ibrahim Rugova (politican) to boycott Serbian institutions.

The demography of the former Yugoslav Republics changed significantly in consequence of the Yugoslav Wars.

Yugoslav Republics by population (as of 1991)

Serbia (proper): 5,824,126

Croatia: 4,760,344

Bosnia and Herzegovina: 4,364,574

Macedonia: 2,033,964

Vojvodina: 2,012,605

Kosovo: 1,954,744

Slovenia: 1,962,606

Montenegro: 615,276
